Experience

Walt Traver, a partner in the firm's San Francisco office, is a litigator who holds Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV Preeminent peer rating with over thirty years experience in a broad range of fields including banking, investment services, real estate, commercial disputes, FINRA disputes, employment, construction, insurance bad faith, product liability, municipal law and environmental contamination. He has represented banks, savings and loans, broker-dealers, financial advisors, real estate brokers, developers, employers, contractors and other businesses as well as municipal agencies. He has acted as lead trial counsel in various matters, including numerous state and federal claims on behalf of banks sued for wrongful foreclosure, state and federal credit reporting and Commercial Code violations, financial elder abuse, and aiding and abetting Ponzi schemes, real estate brokers for alleged fraud relating to the sale of a $6 million agricultural property located on the San Mateo coast, employers and employees for breach of loyalty, developers in partition actions as well as claims against title insurers and escrow companies for mishandling purchase money trust deeds, financial advisors against investor claims, and various commercial lessors.

Mr. Traver has obtained a defense verdict on behalf of a real estate broker in a lengthy jury trial involving real estate fraud, negligence and elder abuse claims. Other trial results include a defense verdict in a two month jury trial based on business and personal injury claims arising out of pesticide exposure as well as several verdicts and judgments in favor of various banks and savings and loan associations. He has also handled complex litigation for recovery of cleanup costs for petroleum contamination sites. Mr. Traver's experience includes appellate matters such as the federal preemption opinion in Lopez v. World Savings & Loan Association (2003) 105 Cal.App.4th 729, alleged violations of state and federal credit reporting acts in Banga v. World Savings & Loan Association (2006) 2006 WL 1467967, and a recent opinion affirming his client’s summary judgment in N.K. Beverly Hills Corporation v. JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. (2012) 2012 WL 6583685,a case involving a borrower’s claimed breach of its right of first refusal to purchase a $29 million loan from Washington Mutual Bank.
 
Mr. Traver’s clients include JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., J.P. Morgan Securities LLC, Bank of the West, Citibank, N.A. and City National Bank.
 
Mr. Traver has served on various non-profit boards including the YMCA of the Desert, the Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert and the Ross Recreation District.
